When to church plant

Not that what I think about this is ever likely to have that much impact but I have long thought that 150 is about as big as a church should get before planting. The Economist has just told me that this isn't just a random number I plucked out of my head but is built into my DNA.

150, you see, is actually Dunbar's number.

  1. Dave,

I'm in perfect agreement. Not a fan of churches getting bigger than about 100-150 or so.

    All my love,

  2. Interesting. So what do you make of the church on the day of pentecost, or the other large churches in Acts? Must each member of a church be able to have meaningful relationships with every other person in the church for it to be called a church?

  3. Arron, Nice to find something to agree on ;)

Stanton, I'm not saying that church does not exist or is unhelpful if it is larger than 150. I'm just saying it is not ideal.

  4. Dear Stanton,

You can hardly call 3000 in one day a planned and progressive growth either! Plus, the early Christians met in smaller groups as well as bigger ones (Acts 2:46).

    Dave,

Amen! May there be more of the same; I hate to feel divided from the ones I love, even over doctrine.

    Love,

  5. Arron, I suppose we shouldn't ever even feel divided. After all we are of "one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all."

... I love those verses, you can mull over them for a long time.
