What defines you?

"it's not who you are underneath, it's what you do that defines you." (Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins)

"[Hegel] grasps the nature of work and comprehends objective man, authentic because actual, as the result of his own work" (Marx)

"man is nothing else but that which he makes of himself" (Satre)

"your action, and your action alone, determines your worth" (Fichte)

In case you think I am wider-read than I am, I stole all but one of those from Oswald Bayer (guess which).

  1. this oswald fella sounds like a hero... I love what you mentioned elsewhere he says about justification being the declarative word of God which brings new creation!

  2. He is a hero. I like him a lot.

However he is quite demanding for me so I can only read small bits at a time.

He is German and a there has been a flood of translations of his stuff over the last 10 years. So he is only just getting known.

His 'Martin Luther's Theology' is a funny book too. It is purposely trying to apply Luther to our present situation without really engaging with any other theologians. However, it is difficult to see where Luther ends and Bayer begins. Bayer is clearly massively dependent on Luther, but he has his own ideas and I think he reads them into Luther.
