Shamelessly stolen from Tony Reinke because I'd like to remember it. A stripped down Apostles' Creed with a touch more of a redemptive-historical flavour?
"The essence of the Christian religion consists in the reality that
the creation of the Father,
ruined
by sin,
is restored
in the death of the Son of God,
and re-created
by the grace of the Holy Spirit
into a kingdom of God."
Herman Bavinck, Reformed Dogmatics, 1:61.
you would enjoy Al Wolters, Creation Regained (2nd edition)
ReplyDeletebuilding on bavinck, he outlines worldview more helpfully than eg Sire (who seems to make worldview a bucket into which everything gets chucked) in terms of the creational structure/sinful direction of
all things as created by god, ruined by sin, and within the scope of redemption. Make sure you get the 2nd edition because it's got a great addendum interacting with Newbigin & Wright: on worldview, mission and story.
I think you've mentioned it before, and others have too. So I've gone and ordered it! It looks short and an interesting mix of influences.
ReplyDeleteI like your criticism of Sire. "a bucket into which everything gets chucked"... yes, that is how I/others often think of worldviews (inc the Christian faith), when really structure/story maybe a better way. Will try and remember that.
BTW I've been reading this book called Longing to Know by Esther Meek (there is a talk by her entitled "Knowing knowing, knowing God: Contours of Covenant Epistemology"). Have you read it? What do you think? She is trying to popularise Polanyi, and in her long-forthcoming book (and partly in the lecture) she is throwing in covenant. Its wetting my appetite but I think she could do better. I'm wondering if there is anything else out there you know of at a fairly popular level attempting something similar, but better? Obviously there is Newbigin, but I've read lots of his stuff. Incidentally, would be interesting if this was online.
